You Can Take Photos In Rockville, Darn It
Many are riled that some photography might be prohibited in the new Rockville Town Square. The Sentinel has >run a piece that ledes with: “A picture is worth 1,000 words, unless one of them is ‘No.’” Washington Post Metro reporter Marc Fisher has weighed in on his blog slugging his piece “Photo Flap Moves To Rockville.”
There’s reason to be concerned. While developed privately, Town Square is really a public place, and was funded with a not-insignificant bunch of City cash. But a spokesperson for Federal Realty, which developed Town Square, has been quoted recently saying that there may be situations where people might be asked to stop taking photos. Mayoral candidate Drew Powell says he was stopped from taking a photo in front of the new library.
Still, concern may not yet need to be alarm. It appears that Federal does not actually have any policy in effect that prohibits picture taking on the streets of downtown Rockville. City Manager Scott Ullery has gotten involved and has received an email from them to that effect (thanks Scott!).
This matters to Rockville Central more than you may imagine: the vast majority of Pictures Of The Day are snapped right in Town Square!
