Red Light Cameras In Rockville
I’ve had a few questions (based on my >recent traffic cameras article) about where the red light cameras are in Rockville. I am sure it is not because people want to run red lights. Nope.
The map below shows the places you might want to take extra care.
Red markers indicate Montgomery County Police cameras, and yellow markers are for Rockville Police cameras. You can see we are well covered. To keep the map uncluttered, I don’t have separate markers for “Westbound,” “Northbound,” etc. Plus, it will keep you on your toes!

I’ve come to have mixed feelings about these red light cameras. In theory, they are supposed to make the roads safer by conditioning people not to run red lights, but I’ve been hit from behind twice within a year at stoplights with cameras because I stopped when a light went to yellow. The person behind me apparently expected me to run the light. Most recently, this happened on Veirs Mill at Twinbrook- which to me seems to have a very short yellow portion of the cycle. I was caught running that light not long after the camera was put in place and I didn’t want that to happen again. I’d be curious to know whether others have had similar experiences. I’ve heard a number of people say that they believe these cameras to be more important as fund raisers for a jurisdiction than contributers to traffic safety. I do think that the speed cameras have made certain streets much safer by slowing traffic, but I’m not sure about the red light cameras. I hope people will grow more accustomed to them and expect the cars in front of them to stop rather than run the light.
