Keep On Boiling! Some Of You.

As many >Rockville Central readers may know, a water main break at Muncaster Mill Rd. and Meadowside Lane caused a major problem for water throughout Montgomery County.

Rockville is a different system than Montgomery County and Rockville’s city water was unaffected.

However, some Rockville residents do get water from WSSC (instead of the City) and those residents do need to boil water and had to restrict water use. WSSC customers can be found throughout the City, including all of King Farm and parts of Twinbrook.

While yesterday’s water-use restrictions have been lifted, WSSC customers must still boil water for three days.

How to tell? If you get a water bill from WSSC, you are not using City water. Another way of checking is to look at your fire hydrant. Green and silver are WSSC; red is Rockville.

The County has more information here. The City has more info here.

You cannot tell where your water is coming from by the color of the fire hydrant if you live in Rockville. I live in Fireside Park. Our hydrants are red. Our water comes from WSSC. Apparently the city of Rockville made Fireside Park paint our green hydrants red. Don’t know how many other places have had their green hydrants painted red. I have sent emails to the city of Rockville telling them to correct their information but so far they have ignored correcting this safety information. >

Because our water bill comes indirectly through a third party billing service, the residents of my complex may not know where their water comes from unless they read the very small print on the bill.

Why won’t the city correct this health/safety message?

An excellent point, Virginia, thank you for sharing it.>

The BEST way to tell is to see if your water bill is FROM the City. Otherwise, play it safe and boil.

I simply called the Condo Management Company and asked them if we get WSSC water. Unfortunately, we do. >

WSSC also has a map of the affected area.

Finally today WTOP has produced a detailed map of who was affected and who was not, and according to that map, I was not in the affected zone. It’s not right that it takes me three days to get information. My property manager and my third party biller for my water said one thing, and the response I got from Rockville late yesterday said something else. The information flow was > very bad for this incident.

Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission is WSSC, not WSCC.

Thanks, ed, for noticing; I made the change. It was just a typo and I did not reread closely enough. My fingers have a will of their own. I STILL can’t get them to refrain from typing “teh” when I mean “the.”
