Don't Move That Firewood!

It’s most definitely Summer Campout Season. I know, because I am preparing to go on a one-week Cub Scout campout.>
At campouts, one favorite activity for everyone is campfires. Many times people will bring their own firewood, in case it’s not available at the campground.
Rockville Central friend Deborah Landau has written in with a good tip: Don’t do it!
I’ll let her say it:
I’ve been working with a group called the Continental Dialogue, to try and reduce the spread of non-native, invasive insects and pathogens throughout the US. One serious new pest we’ve got here in MD is the Emerald Ash Borer, which is devastating ash trees in several states. Moving firewood is one of the key ways it’s spread (the insects can move from tree to tree on their own, but obviously campers driving around with insect-infested firewood can greatly increase its rate of spread).
Debbie says they have just developed a website devoted to this issue. It’s pretty easy to remember: www.dontmovefirewood.org.
Thanks Debbie!

Dontmovefirewood.org is a great resource – and it appears to be growing larger with more resources daily. Thanks for the tip!
