Dan Reed: Where's My Rockville Hall?

>Rockville Central friend Dan Reed, who founded the influential Silver Spring blog Just Up The Pike (which was an inspiration for this blog), has a wonderful piece in today’s Diamondback Online, which is University of Maryland’s independent paper.

Seems the solons of College Park are set to name a new dorm building after a little-known Maryland town called Oakland. Dan asks: why not the county seat of Montgomery? Why not Our Fair City?

The 2007 Census update showed Rockville has 58,706 residents and is the third-largest city in the state by population. It’s home to a branch of Celera Genomics where the human genome was decoded. On top of that, Rockville has three Metro stops, the gravesite of F. Scott Fitzgerald, author of The Great Gatsby and even a mention in R.E.M.’s 1984 single “(Don’t Go Back to) Rockville.” It’s got a newly revitalized downtown with overpriced parking and overpriced stores. I’m not gonna lie, guys: Rockville rocks.

Dan, we could not agree more.

Overpriced parking and shops? You know it’s gotta be good! Actually, I have to point out that the REM song is about Rockville, *Georgia*, not Maryland. And when I think of Oakland, I’m not thinking of the little town near Deep Creek either ….

I must, regretfully, beg to differ on the Rockville, Georgia point. It’s Rockville, Maryland. I used to be neighbors with a person who, in her previous life, had been R.E.M.’s assistant in Athens, Georgia. She verified that it’s Our Fair City.>

    Also see here.

Hate to be a party pooper, but I actually know something about this!

Wow, I stand corrected; thanks. So where’s the factory?
