Events In Rockville 1/15/09 – 1/25/09
>Pick of the Week
The BIG event this week is the 12 o’clock noon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration at Richard Montgomery High Sch
ool on the national holiday, Monday January 19th. Last year people were standing in the back so the celebration has been moved to the larger auditorium at RMHS. Joe Madison, the special guest speaker, goes beyond morning radio show host to activist. He doesn’t just talk, he does. His signature line being “What are you going to do about it?”. Entertainment from pianists Grace Cho and Alejandro Hernadez-Valdez, Soul in Motion and Body Moves, Motion Mania Dance Center’s Ruby Company, soloist Renée Barnes, and The Solution (during the Prelude).
My absolute favorite MLK, Jr. celebration was a church service with Coretta Scott King in Atlanta, Georgia during a college experiential learning class, Black Leaders and the Struggle for Freedom, back at Gettysburg College in 1984. We traveled throughout the South meeting politicians, activists, educators, and innovators. What an uplifting and moving experience which I remember fondly as we enter this Inauguration Week. A celebration indeed!

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration at Richard Montgomery High School As one of the largest Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., birthday celebrations in the Washington, D.C. area, the City of Rockville will commemorate what would have been King’s 80th birthday with a free program and reception. The event has been moved to the Richard Montgomery High School auditorium to provide room for an expected audience of more than 750 people. The school is located at 250 Richard Montgomery Drive. The featured guest will be Joe Madison, noted radio personality, civil rights activist and humanitarian. Known for asking his radio listeners, “What are you going to do about it?” Madison has been engaged in civil rights issues for more than 30 years and was honored Rockville’s Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Strives to Fulfill the Dream with the “Freedom of Speech Award” by Talker magazine in April 2008. The public is encouraged to attend the event, which is made possible by the Mayor and Council of Rockville and the Rockville Human Rights Commission. “The Martin Luther King Jr. celebration is always something that everyone should be a part of, but the event planned for this year has a special significance,” said Yvonna Love, chair of the Rockville Human Rights Commission. “The fact that the majority of all Americans, regardless of race or religion, selected an African-American, Barack Obama, as our president is truly a manifestation of Dr. King’s dream.” The program will include performances by pianists Grace Cho and Alejandro Hernadez-Valdez, Soul in Motion and Body Moves, Motion Mania Dance Center’s Ruby Company, soloist Renée Barnes, and The Solution (during the Prelude). The Martin Luther King Jr., Youth Award and the F. Michael Taff Award will be also be presented during the program. The Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Award is given to a high school student who has promoted the dreams and goals of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The F. Michael Taff Award honors an individual, business or organization that has made a contribution to improving the lives of people in Rockville with disabilities. more info
