APPEAL PROCEDURE

You have the right to appeal the notice of assessment mailed to you by the State of Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation.

APPEAL PROCESS

A three step appeal process is available to protect the property owner from an incorrect assessment.

The first level appeal is with the local assessment office.

The second and third level appeals are with the Property Tax Assessment Appeal Boards and the Maryland Tax Court.

These are independent agencies that are completely separate from the Department of Assessments and Taxation.

At each level in the appeal process you have the opportunity to present evidence showing why the Total New Market Value (page 3, Box 7 of your assessment notice) is incorrect.

APPEAL FORM (MANUAL OR ONLINE)

To appeal your notice of assessment, you can visit their website at http://www.dat.state.md.us/ (File a Real Property Assessment Appeal) or complete and sign the appeal form mailed to you and return it to the local assessment office at the address shown on page 3 of your notice.

APPEAL DEADLINE (BY 2/13/09)

An appeal must be filed within 45 days from the date of your notice.

APPEAL OPTIONS

When filing an appeal you have three options:

• to submit an appeal in writing
• to meet personally with an assessor
• to have a telephone hearing.

HOMESTEAD TAX CREDIT ELIGIBILITY APPLICATION REMINDER

Enclosed with your assessment notice was the one-time Homestead Tax Credit Eligibility Application Form. If you have not completed this form already, please do so today. This credit reduces the amount that you pay for your real estate taxes. For more information please go to http://www.dat.state.md.us/.
