Community Input Sought for Sk8Park
An informal community meeting of parents and kids interested in the >Sk8Park in Welsh Park will be held this Sunday, March 15th and next Sunday, March 22nd at Noon. Community Recreation Manager, Jon McLaren, will be on hand to talk about fixing up and improving the park. What features do you want?
Drumroll please … the Park is going to be open year-round, unsupervised, and for free during daylight hours!
Kids will be able to volunteer to help build the new Park. They’ll even be eligible for SSL hours. The plan is to open the Park on April 11, 2009.
So if you use the Park, get involved!

Thanks for the info. I will be sure to share this with my son and his friends. >
I had hoped to hear directly from the city as this was moving forward, as this is an issue of importance to me and I have been in touch with Mr. McLaren, tho not recently.
Where is the meeting? At the park itself? Is there a notice link so we can put it on facebook?
I have not found a link on the City’s website so you can probably post this article to Facebook!>
I believe the meeting is at the SK8 park itself.
Both meetings will be in the Park. Mr. McLaren will be working there and would like people to stop by. He visited a Human Services Advisory Commision meeting and I brought up the need for places to skate, which is when he told>
me about the changes. He will be sending along more info next week. This is just a very informal start. Spread the word.
Thanks Cindy you always have the most up-to-date info.
Seems to me the skate park should be put in the parking lot next to the Victoria. That’s where the kids like to skate anyway.>
Instead we build them a skatepark with little else around it, then are suprised they want to hang out downtown.
These sk8ters aren't choosy, they like the sidewalks on Gibbs, the pedestrian overpass to Metro station, and all along Maryland Ave. I've wondered if the Pink Bank Bldg owner is liable for skateboard damage to cars parked in their lot.>
What about a Rockville mini-bus that constantly loops between Town Ctr & Welsh Park? Sk8ter aces could just hang on to the rear bumper.
The parking lot next to the Victoria will someday be developed by its owner for much more of a profit.>
Having a free skateboard park during daylight hours is a great addition. I asked Mr. McLaren about the distance from Town Center when we first spoke about it. In skateboarding distance, it’s not that far. Remember, up until this point, the hours were limited at the Sk8park and you had to pay.
I first brought up the skateboarding situation because there was a free skatepark in Twinbrook and it was removed because of neighbor complaints. I was happy to find out the plan for the one in Welsh Park.
Hopefully, if things go well, we’ll have more of these skateparks in neighborhoods in Rockville.
