Events In Rockville 4/16/09 – 4/26/09
Picks of the Week
Variety Is The Spice of Life on Saturday Night, April 18, 2009
First, get some dinner in Rockville Town Square.
Then:
8 PM National Philharmonic Singers
Christ Episcopal Church
107 South Washington Street
Recently I had the great pleasure of hearing the Singers and they are amazing! Sacred vocal-instrumental music by Bach, Sibencanin, Carissimi and Mendelssohn, led by Predrag Gostaon, who is Assistant Conductor of the National Philharmonic. You can meet him at a pre-Concert Lecture at 7 PM. Donations will be accepted for Community Ministries of Rockville. Picture from the NP Singers.
Then:
9 PM The West End
Austin Grill Rockville
36 Maryland Avenue
Live music has returned to Austin Grill and The West End is back on stage with special musical guest Kia Ramarui and her violin. Americana rock with hard-hitting lyrics that never disappoint. They’ll play until late, so there’s plenty of time to make it over there. Free, all ages. The West End is Matthew Taylor, Mike Shawn, Monique DeFrees, and Brad Rourke.
Hoof it around Rockville Town Center this Saturday!

This event is free and open to the public. Guests may park in the white-lined spaces on the Rockville Campus of Montgomery College. The Commemoration will be held on Yom Hashoah, the Day of Remembrance of the six-million who died, and will pay tribute to victims as well as to survivors who convey tremendous courage in remembering and in helping us to remember. This year’s program will feature two Holocaust survivors who will share their experiences. Mohamed Yahya, a refugee from the Darfur region of Sudan and founder and executive director of the Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy, will also speak. Yahya was part of the first human rights group to alert the international community to human rights abuses in western Sudan. To learn more about Yahya’s Coalition and its work, visit this site: http://www.damanga.org/. The Commemoration will begin with a reading not merely of names, but of narratives about real people from many diverse backgrounds who experienced Nazi persecution. Many of these people resisted genocide in some way. A partial exhibit of “Portraits of Life: Holocaust Survivors of Montgomery County,” a documentary project created to tell the stories of survivors who have lived in and around Montgomery County, will also be shown at the commemoration. “Portraits of Life” can be viewed online at: http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/humanities/?page=portraits_of_life
