Pick of the Week

It’s all about the fireworks this weekend but after the holiday:

Calle Sur Performs a Free Outdoor Summer Concert
Gudelsky Outdoor Concert Gazebo at Strathmore
Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at 7:00 PM. FREE.

From their MySpace: “Calle Sur is what happens when you combine man and woman, Black and White, urban and rural.”

Are you in the mood to move? This is the perfect chance to groove to the beats from Latin America: Colombian cumbia, Brazilian Samba, Cuban son, the Dominican merengue, the Venezuelan tambor, and the contemporary Caribbean reggaeton.

The Details:

No pets. If you want somewhere to sit, bring a blanket or low beach chair otherwise you’ll be standing or sitting on the ground.

Park in the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Garage for $4.75 with a mandatory Metro SmarTrip card, which you can purchase in the garage and use to pay on the way out. (Metro doesn’t take cash or any other form of payment.) The entrance to the garage is on Tuckerman Lane along with overflow parking at the meters.

Parking for patrons with handicap plates and Strathmore Member Parking (with Strathmore Summer Parking Pass) is free in the Mansion lot on a space available basis, enter at 10701 Rockville Pike.

Want to eat out and hear the music? The BBQ Shack has BBQ ribs, pulled pork, veggie burgers, hot dogs, side dishes, desserts, soda, water, beer and wine. You can even eat before the show.

www.strathmore.org or call (301) 581-5100 for weather-related delay or cancellation notices.

If you have instruments you are not using, Strathmore collects them for Hungry for Music, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit which provides musical concerts and workshops to underprivileged children and donates instruments to young people who could not otherwise afford them.
