Hoffmann, Moore Announce Candidacies — A Quick Note
This was a big weekend for electoral politics in Rockville as two candidates formally announced their campaigns in separate events.Mayor >Susan Hoffmann announced her intention to seek re-election at a Saturday event, and resident Tom Moore announced his campaign for City Council on Sunday. Both events were at Giuseppi’s.
Cindy Cotte Griffiths and I were each able to attend both events. I shot video of each candidate’s speech. I posted each in a separate article for that candidate (in case each campaign wants to link to it themselves):
Just a note on these events though. As you know we are going to try to attend as many significant campaign events (e.g., announcements) as we can, but with eighteen candidates so far I am certain we won’t be able to. Don’t regard attending one candidate’s event as an endorsement, not even a tacit one! We are going to try to do this with an even hand but it’s not like we’re the New York Times here. We have no staff, work as volunteers, and do it in our spare time.
Cindy and I may both be at some events, and may be at separate events. We are both interested in keeping up with this year’s election campaigns so you may see us lots of places. We also both have families and outside obligations, so we will do an imperfect job. We also will probably disagree on some things, and agree on others. [UPDATE: This paragraph was added later, and the overall post was changed to reflect that it is both Cindy and Brad, not just Brad. My mistake!]
To make matters worse, on a personal level, there are people toward whom I have very warm feelings who may well be running against one another. So I am just going to try to walk a line between keeping folks informed, keeping out of the nitty gritty, and above all being open and fair.
If we can’t make it to your significant event, please please please take photos or (better) video that you can share so we can post it here for all to see!
Oh, one other thing on the videos. As you may know, journalists have lots of rules when it comes to maintaining distance from the things they cover. For instance, I know a number of journalists who make it a point not to eat at the events they cover. Just so everyone is clear, that rule flew out the window for me and I had pizza. Come on, people, it was Giusseppi’s!
