Mayor And Council To Meet Tonight On Gaithersburg West Resolution

The Rockville Mayor and Council are >set to meet tonight at 7:00 pm in an unusual session designed to complete some unfinished business from Monday night’s meeting in time for it to be considered by Montgomery County planners.

This meeting in part grows out of the recent meeting where representatives from the City of Gaithersburg and the Montgomery County Council joined the elected leaders of Our Fair City to discuss the plans that are on the boards to develop the Belward Farm area into a mixed-use “Science City” (among other uses). While the Mayor and Council has expressed support for the overall goal, they have also raised concerns.

At last night’s Mayor and Council meeting, the body discussed a resolution that they plan to pass and send along to the County’s Planning, Housing and Economic Development Committee. However, they did not finish their discussions and the County committee is meeting on Wednesday night. Therefore, in order to make sure the City’s input can be considered, the Mayor and Council is taking the step of meeting tonight.

Council members Bridget Donnell Newton and John Britton will not be attending, but have been working closely by telephone and email with colleagues and are in support of the meeting, according to Council member Piotr Gajewski. The remaining members — Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio, and Council members Gajewski and Mark Pierzchala — constitute a quorum and they will have to vote unanimously (making a majority) in order for the resolution to pass.

In my view, this is a great example of a governing body going the extra mile to make sure its business gets conducted with the end results in mind. It would have been easy to just wait until the next scheduled meeting, but instead the group called the special get together.
