Rockville Organic Grocery Bans Bottled Water
>MOM’s Organic Market, which some have mentioned as a possible new tenant at the empty grocery site in Town Square, has announced that it will eliminate all bottled water from its stores.
According to an article in the Gourmet Retailer, the Rockville-based organic grocery’s effort is part of a “Battle the Bottle” program inspired by the movie “Addicted to Plastic.”
According to the article:
“Societies are truly addicted to plastic, much in the way we are addicted to oil,” said Scott Nash, founder and CEO of Rockville, Md.-based MOM’s. “There are now five swirling masses of plastic in our oceans, each roughly the size of Texas. Plastic never goes away, and the problem will only get worse. The sooner we take action, the better. Not only does plastic damage our environment, but it [also] increases our dependence on oil. The tragic part of our addiction is that, by and large, petroleum-based plastics are not necessary for consumer products and packaging, as we have the technology and innovation to use plastic products that biodegrade.”
As a part of this effort, MOM’s plans to install water filter stations in all of its stores stores so customers can use reusable containers. And, they will offer the first gallon free on every visit.
Get your containers ready!
What do you think? Will you be able to give up your bond to the bottle?

Thrilled to hear it. It’s no less than I’d expect from my favorite local grocery.I’m even more thrilled to hear that they might move into the Town Square. As it is I buy as much as I can from them, but it’s a long hike down the Pike to their super-inconvenient location on Nicholson. I’m in Town Square almost every day and might never shop at another store if they make the move.
This is great. I just hope it doesn’t drive people to buy bottles at regular groceries instead – wouldn’t it maybe be a good idea to still sell water, just in biodegradable containers? But — MOM’s in Town Center?!?! That would be WONDERFUL!!!!!!! Please encourage.
AWESOME!!! We use our own filters at home, which is so so easy to do, but given that the same folks who take reusable bags to MOM’s will be open to taking their own bottles, more power to ‘em!!! I am THRILLED that someone has gone ahead and done this!I too would love love LOVE for them to move into RTC as well.
thanks for this info. personally, i’m conflicted. i admit to buying bottled water but sometimes i buy glass–is that also banned? i don’t ever just throw the plastic bottles away; i recycle them and reuse them when possible. if i’m out somewhere i bring the bottle home. i do buy the 2 1/2 gallon size for my refrigerator.my kids needs them for school and camp–it’s difficult to send an already-opened refillable bottle of water. interesting thing i’ve noticed: as the bottling companies have sought to reduce the amount of plastic in their bottles, they’re become more brittle and don’t stand up to washing and re-using. as far as mom’s coming to town square–that’s simply a hope of some residents. i could be wrong, but i don’t believe i’ve ever seen any expression of interest from the company.frankly, i don’t think they’d get enough support. whole foods isn’t that far away, and neither is the existing mom’s.
Also, as our fellow editor over at RockvilleLiving.com Magazine, Paul Triolo, explains, BPT and other chemicals in plastics are unhealthy:http://www.rockvilleliving.com/magazine/articles/reducing-your-bpa-exposureHe has some great ideas on how to reduce exposure.
