Untangling the mess

Things are slowly getting back to normal here in Rockville, as Pepco works to bring power back to those who lost it, and businesses, community organizations, and others work to get things moving again. Here is the latest status, as of Wednesday afternoon about 4:30:

Power: 23,710 Pepco customers still have no power in Montgomery County (we do not have Rockville-only numbers). Keep reporting power outages at 877-737-2662. By now, Pepco has finished its assessments and should be able to give you an estimated time of restoration. They have 400 crews at work.

As Pepco restores power in areas, downed wires that were previously dead may become live. See here for a dramatic story about that. Use extreme caution around any downed power line.

Rockville summer camps and most facilities are open. The Swim Center is operating as usual, as is the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre. Facilities at Rockville Civic Center Park, including Glenview Mansion and Croydon Creek Nature Center are still closed.

Recycling, refuse and yard waste are being collected as scheduled. Crews will also collect branches that have been dragged to the curb.

Ride On bus is operating on a normal schedule. Check here for more information.

Montgomery College still has a few outages. All NIGHT classes in these buildings are canceled tonight: Music, Physical Education, Counseling and Advising, Art, the Performing Arts Center, and the Annex.

Julius West Middle School is the only public school in Rockville without power. No word yet on whether it has been restored. Check this MCPS page for the latest.

All Rockville libraries are open.

Mother nature is unrelenting. No sooner than we got used to having power again after losing it Sunday we lost it again Thursday night at the same time! This time it was restored a little quicker, only 12 hours for things in the refrigerator to warm up. Is it OK to eat that California Sunshine cold soup with shrimp in it? Well at least we have a renewed sense of our dependence on Pepco. Does this mean we have to keep those 300 repair crews we borrowed from Ohio? How many people will now go out and buy generator sets? Our beautiful tree canopy of Tree City has drawbacks too!

Maybe it’s time to FORCE PEPCO to put at least the main feeder lines underground. Doing that much may help minimize the widespraed nature of storm outages like we recently experienced.

One of the things that’s so unsettling about these displays of our vulnerability to the weather, and to the lack of access to public utilities, is how much disparity and inconsistency there can be in close proximity. How is it that one building can entirely lose power for three whole days, and yet another building directly across the street never lost power in that whole time? How can one street look as devastated as if it were hit by an F3 tornado, and yet two streets away there’s the same serene scene of beautiful towering oaks that have stood unchanged for decades?

Yes, there are logical explanations for those discrepancies, but it doesn’t resolve the internal confusion about feeling stunned and devastated, while continuing to function as though nothing permanent just happened.
