Weekend to Weekend Pick 9/16/10: Cellist Who Ditched The Van To Sing

First I noticed the sustainable angle, Ben Sollee is biking to Strathmore and he started in Long Beach, California. That’s a whole lot of miles without support vehicles. Then I realized he sings with a cello. You have to admit that’s different. Finally, I listened to this video on the Strathmore event page and realized he was clever, entertaining, and talented.

This isn’t the last stop. He’ll end up back in Kentucky. The Tour, sponsored by the Kentucky Coffeetree Café, is a “reaction to the massive carbon footprint that many tours leave behind (particularly the fleet of 53’ trucks required to haul an elaborate U2 stage) …” Ben also wants to experience the towns and communities with the slow pace of a bike rather than planes or buses.

Yet another reason to catch his unique show in Rockville: by December he’s be touring with Billy Bragg in the UK.

During the past three years, I’ve often highlighted events in and around Rockville. For a year and a half I researched and wrote the Weekend to Weekend listing of all the happenings in Rockville before we asked Helen Triolo at Rockville Living to automate the process and encouraged everyone to post event announcements on her wonderful calendar. For a while I picked the best of the week to highlight here on Rockville Central. Now I’m back at it again with the W2W Pick.
