VisArt‘s Digital Arts Director, Tim Hampton, reminds us that this Friday, January 9, 2009 is the deadline for VisArts’ annual student photography call for entries.

Middle and high school students who enter will have the opportunity to have their photos juried by Frank Goodyear, the Assistant Curator of Photography at the National Portrait Gallery. If selected, their work will be exhibited at VisArts during the upcoming How You See It exhibition.

Entering is completely free to middle- and high-school students. Simply send an e-mail to digitallab@visartscenter.org with either one or two photos attached (they can be digitally altered or pure).

Include these 5 pieces of information:

1. Artist Name
2. Image Title(s)
3. Artist Age
4. Current School
5. Name(s) of the artist’s photography or art teachers.

As Tim points out, “Maybe some selected works will end up being submitted as candidates for your POTD.“

We’ll complete our full week of reader-contributed Pictures Of the Day with another one from Rockville Central friend David Chisham. I am such a sucker for flowers. Of this photo, David says, “I suppose it’s the last we’ll see of the Black-eyed Susans for the year.”

Hopefully it will not be the last photo we see from David!

This shot of Town Square is by Rockville Central reader Jonathan Haber. After all that Hanna activity, the clouds above the courtyard gave me chills. (This was taken near the beginning of summer, though.)

Welcome to our week of all-reader-submitted Pictures Of The Day! We are excited to share this good work.

This beautiful shot of sunflowers is by Rockville Central friend Alain Menguy. Of it he says, “What about a couple of sunflowers hanging there on Montgomery Avenue (route 28) as a symbolic end of the summer?” I say, “Sure!”

(With apologies to Fall Out Boy.) This warm and lovely weather broughht out my perverse streak. Lucky for me, Rockville Central friend Mark Pierzchala sent along a clutch of POTD candidates, and this one was among the bunch.

Season’s Greetings!

There’s reason to be concerned. While developed privately, Town Square is really a public place, and was funded with a not-insignificant bunch of City cash. But a spokesperson for Federal Realty, which developed Town Square, has been quoted recently saying that there may be situations where people might be asked to stop taking photos. Mayoral candidate Drew Powell says he was stopped from taking a photo in front of the new library.

Still, concern may not yet need to be alarm. It appears that Federal does not actually have any policy in effect that prohibits picture taking on the streets of downtown Rockville. City Manager Scott Ullery has gotten involved and has received an email from them to that effect (thanks Scott!).

This matters to Rockville Central more than you may imagine: the vast majority of Pictures Of The Day are snapped right in Town Square!
