Rockville Roundtable

Rockville Roundtable

A little more than a year ago, I thought I would try a little experiment. I announced that I was going to be at lunch at a certain time and place and I invited anyone who wished to join me and we’d split the bill. I was shocked to find a dozen people come. We had a wonderful, informal lunch — and so the “Rockville Roundable” was born!

The name comes from a little sign that my friend Ruth Hanessian drew on yellow construction paper with a heart on it. (We were meeting on Valentine’s Day).

Since that time, Rockville Roundtable has met just about every month. It’s a different day and place each time so as many people can come as possible. Sometimes there are more people, other times just a few. It’s always the same rules: Everyone is welcome, and it is informal. There is no set agenda — we just let the conversation unfold.

I hope you can make the next Rockville Roundtable at Benjarong in Wintergreen Plaza on Wednesday, July 22 at 12:30 pm. Benjarong is a community institution and I am excited to be going there for the first time.

If you think of it, shoot me an email to let me know you are coming. However, if you forget to rsvp, don’t let that stop you! Just show up! Everyone’s welcome!

Rockville Roundtable, June 23, 2009

If you missed today’s monthly Rockville Roundtable informal lunch, you really missed out! It was a great conversation, spanning civic engagement, health care reform (from the 1970′s until today), Princeton Place, the All America City Award, and more.

Ooh, there’s a picture of us, taken by our waitress at the Apollo (I love that place).

We always have a few new faces in the mix and today was no exception. State Senator Jennie Forehand was there, as well as other new and familiar friends!

The next Rockville Roundtable will be Wednesday, July 22 at 12:30. We have note yet decided the location so stay tuned. We may have a surprise in store!

What is the Rockville Roundtable? So glad you asked. It’s a once-a-month informal get-together where a bunch of us . . . well, we get together. No speeches! Come as you are! (I am frequently very, very, very, very casual.)

Here’s what a recent one looked like!

There’s a cute picture of our one-year anniversary lunch in February. You can see me holding up a sign that was lovingly drawn by Ruth Hanessian for the very first Rountable on Valentine’s Day 2008. In fact, it was Ruth who coined the name. I had just planned to call it “lunch.”

Hope to see you! No rsvp necessary but if you think of it, drop me an email to let me know.

Rockville Roundtable: Ten Thumbs Up for Spice Xing

Our very informal Rockville Roundtable enjoyed an extremely tasty lun>ch at Spice Xing in Town Square this afternoon. Every bite from the lunch buffet was deemed delicious and the $7.95 price was just right too. We all raved about the eggplant, chicken, and even the cabbage dishes. The hot mango dessert was refreshing when added to the fruit. (The only difficulty was ordering a meal instead of the buffet which took some extra negotiating.) We all recommend the restaurant with great enthusiasm.

We talked about photography, Buy Rockville, the Blessing of the Animals, and lots of other happenings. We even had a daughter home from college. The meal and conversation were terrific but we missed Brad Rourke and John Tyner who had both not missed a Rockville Roundtable until today!

I remembered my camera then left it in the car so I apologize for the cell phone picture, and to Kari Keaton who was cut out of this shot! Cindy

Don’t forget, the next Rockville Roundtable will be held on >Wednesday, May 13, at 12:30 pm. We will meet at the new Indian restaurant in Town Square: Spice Xing. That’s on Gibbs Street.

What is the Rockville Roundtable? I am glad you asked that. It’s just an informal lunch. We meet every month, always on a different day (so different people can come). It’s come-as-you-are, very casual, there are no speeches, it’s low pressure, and some people even say it’s fun! There is usually about a dozen of us, but sometimes our numbers grow. Why, look, there’s a photo from our last lunch.

It’s just a chance to get together and talk about anything that seems interesting.

Hope to see you on the 13th! If you think of it, please shoot me an email rsvp’ing, but if you forget, don’t worry: just show up.

See you there!

Yesterday, the infamous >Rockville Roundtable met for our monthly itinerant lunch, this time at the Hollywood Diner on Rockville Pike.

We had a great time, enjoyed fabulous conversation, and generally had a great time. Watch this space for information on the next Rockville Roundtable.

Here is our take on the afternoon:

The Roundtable is just an informal lunch, each time on a different day and at a different place. Anyone is welcome, there are no speeches or anything fancy, and it is usually a blast. Our numbers have been growing slowly but surely.

See you at the next one!

I recently promised a location for the upcoming monthly meeting of the fabled Rockville Roundtable and here it is! Thanks to a suggestion by John Tyner (whom, if memory serves, has attended every one of our monthly casual lunches), we’ll be meeting on Monday, March 9 at 12:30 at Lemoncello Restaurant, 2005 Veirs Mill Road.

Why there? Well, mostly because I happened to be hungry for pizza when I got John’s email, and I was looking for a spot in Twinbrook!
Hope to see you Monday for this casual, no-speeches-and-no-agenda lunch. Everyone is welcome.

Next Rockville Roundtable: Monday March 9

Just a note to let everyone know that the next Rockville Roundtable will be Monday, March 9 at 12:30. It will be somewhere in Twinbrook, but I have not yet determined where (give me ideas! It works best if people pay when they get their food, rather than table service).

The Roundtable is just an informal lunch, each time on a different day and at a different place. Anyone is welcome, there are no speeches or anything fancy, and it is usually a blast. Our numbers have been growing slowly but surely, and this month’s first-anniversary meetingwas the largest yet. (There we are.)
Watch this space for the location, which I should have nailed down in a few days.

Thank You For Coming To Rockville Roundtable's First Anniversary

Today we had a wonderful time at the first anniversary party for the Rockville Roundtable, which we held where it all began at Austin Grill in Town Square.

Most of these folks have been meeting together each month for an informal lunch, each time on a different day and at a different place. Anyone is welcome, there are no speeches or anything fancy, and it is usually a blast. Our numbers have been growing slowly but surely, and today’s lunch was the largest yet. (Hey, look! That’s us!)

I want to thank everyone who comes, and in particular the special people who have been supporters from the beginning and who keep encouraging me to keep it going. I won’t name names, becuase it is not that kind of gathering — but you know who you are.

Watch this space for date and location of the next Rockville Roundtable!
