Police: Make Sure To Ask For ID From Utility Workers
We’ve gotten word that the Rockville Police are investigating a scam that occurred late last month involving fake utility workers who gained entry to a home and robbed it with the owner present.
Here is the information from the police:
The incident involved a subject knocking on the victim’s door stating he was with the water company. The subject stated further that he needed to inspect the victim’s water pipes for any potential damage due to the accident that occurred the night before.
The victim let the subject into her residence. The subject went to the basement with the victim to inspect the victim’s water pipes and meter. The subject appeared to have a speaker or microphone attached to his coat and he appeared to be talking to someone. The subject informed the victim that there were crewmembers outside working on her pipes. The subject remained inside the residence for approximately 15 minutes before leaving.
The victim stated she immediately went upstairs and discovered that her bedroom had been ransacked by an unknown person and property had been taken.
The victim stated that she had left her front door unsecured while she was downstairs with the subject.
Remember, any utility workers attempting to enter your home, should have proper employee identification for the company they are claiming to work for. If the individual does not have proper identification, contact the police immediately.
