From the Rockville Civic Ballet Flyer

Perhaps because of my name, I’ve always loved the Cinderella story, especially her positive attitude when faced with constant adversity. She never stopped appreciating the wonders of life. Prince Charming was a side note, but I’m glad that worked out for her too.

See a live performance of Cinderella by the Rockville Civic Ballet including a presentation of Gershwin’s Concerto in F.

Saturday, August 7, 2010 7:30 – 9:30 PM
Sunday, August 8, 2010 2 – 4 PM
At the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre (603 Edmonston Drive)

The production is directed by Claudia Mangan. You also won’t want to miss the wonderful bake sale and famous Craft and Gift Table.

Event Fees: $16 Adult, $12 Senior, $12 Child
To purchase tickets in person at the walk-in Box Office: Hours are Tuesday - Saturday: 2pm to 7pm except it’s closed Saturday July 31st. Directions by phone: 240-314-5004

To purchase tickets online: Leap Frog Tickets

During the past three years, I’ve often highlighted events in and around Rockville. For a year and a half I researched and wrote the Weekend to Weekend listing of all the happenings in Rockville before we asked Helen Triolo at Rockville Living to automate the process and encouraged everyone to post event announcements on her wonderful calendar. For a while I picked the best of the week to highlight here on Rockville Central. Now I’m back at it again with the W2W Pick.

Don't Give Up Registering for Ride and Stride (Updated)

Fun Bike On The Streets During the 2009 Ride and Stride

Update: Jon McLaren has let us know that the small glitch was fixed last week and on-line registration is working for children under 13.

When I tried to register my family for Ride and Stride 4 Rockville, Rock Enroll wouldn’t allow me to include my 9-year old and was charging the $25 adult fee for my 13-year old. Since both are free, a quick call to the staff in the Department of Recreation and Parks (240-314-8620 during business hours) had them registered in no time, but Rock Enroll was unfortunately having technical difficulties with youth signups today. They’re working on fixing the system.

The ninth annual Ride and Stride during Hometown Holidays on Sunday, May 30, 2010 offers running, walking or biking options. Short or long, there’s an option for everyone so all ages can participate: 2K or 5K run/walks, and 12-mile or 28-mile bike rides.

The funds raised from Ride and Stride provide financial assistance for children who can’t afford City recreation and after-school activities, and support the Rockville Bike Fund to promote safe bicycling in the city.

My family has never ridden in the Ride and Stride and we’re looking forward to giving it a try with some friends. Yes, we’re biking! Staff are supposed to be on hand with maps. We’ve been promised food, prizes and health info. Participants can bring a t-shirt, backpack or cycling shirt to be silk screened with the Ride and Stride for Rockville logo.

Residents can register online here using activity number 31709. Rockville residents older than 13 are $25, non-resident adults are $35. Event time is 8 AM until 12 PM. The start and finish location is in front of the Red Brick Courthouse.

Who else is going and what can we expect?

>Christ Episcopal Church in Rockville will be the setting for the National Philharmonic Singers’ holiday program, presented on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 8 p.m. Join Conductor Stan Engebretson, Guest Vocal Artist Molly Donnelly, The Singers, and Theodore Guerrant on organ as they perform choral music from Renaissance to Contemporary periods.

Kate Gordon sent along this recommendation:

This concert, always my favorite of the year, promises to be a beautiful event with candlelight processionals and a chance for folks to hear their favorite carols and experience pieces they may not be as familiar with. Both of our Maestros, Piotr Gajewski and Stan Engebretson, have looked at the outreach work of the National Philharmonic Singers and our free concerts at Christ Episcopal as a gift we give back to the community that supports us with such enthusiasm. And, given the proximity of Christ Episcopal to the Town Center, it is a great chance to make an evening of it with shopping and dinner.

There will be an excerpt from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio sung by special guest, mezzo-soprano Molly Donnelly. In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn’s birth, the ensemble will perform Ave Maria for tenor solo and eight-part choir as well as the anthem There Shall a Star appear from Jacob. Also on the program will be Gaudete, a contemporary Swedish arrangement of old traditional carols by Anders Ohrwall. Spirituals and other traditional carols and works by Praetorius and Gabrieli will complete the evening. The finale will be a celebration of traditional carols for all to sing.

All free-will donations will benefit the Community Ministries of Rockville.

The National Philharmonic Singers is the chamber ensemble of the National Philharmonic Chorale, conducted by Maestro Engebretson, and is the resident choral group of the Music Center at Strathmore.

Christ Episcopal Church is located at 107 South Washington Street.

Two additional friends have emailed me about this performance so I know it is an evening we should not miss!

One of my favorite parts of living in the Washington DC area is having so many cultures at my fingertips. From the many parents sharing their heritages at Ritchie Park Elementary’s International Night to the never-ending performances emanating from around the world at our local venues, Rockville is truly a little United Nations.

This Saturday, November 21, 2009, the Washington Balalaika Society (WBS) will perform the traditional folk music of Russia, “Russian Revelry,” with guest artist Alexander Chemabaev, internationally renowned percussionist, at 7:30 p.m. at our very own F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre.

What’s so wonderful is that children under 12 are free with a paying adult so a family can experience this special performance together at a reasonable cost. Adults are $20, seniors $18, and students with IDs $15.

The WBS consists of more than 60 musicians from professional to amateur, who practice together in Arlington to be the best of their genre. Since 1988 the WBS has performed the music of Russian, Ukraine and eastern Europe on traditional Russian folk instruments in the historical tradition of the great orchestras of Russia but it also explores new possibilities for this very unique family of instruments.

The WBS Orchestra has performed at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall with the Paul Hill Chorale and The Choral Arts Society of Washington; Carnegie Hall in New York; the Round Lake Auditorium in New York’s Adirondacks; Lisner Auditorium, the Embassy of the Russian Federation, Constitution Hall and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington; NOVA-Annandale; NOVA-Alexandria; James Madison University; The Theater at Washington, VA; Randolph-Macon Woman’s College; Walters Gallery in Baltimore and the Ceres Mansion and Weinberg Theatre in Frederick.

Now you can hear the largest orchestra of Russian folk instruments in North America right in our neighborhood.

F. Scott Fitzgerald Walk-in Box Office Hours:
Tuesday - Saturday: 2pm to 7pm except:
Friday, Nov 20 until 5:30
Saturdays, Nov. 21 until 9:30
Closed Nov 26-28

Rockville High School Drama will have you rolling in the aisle with ” The Pink Panther Strikes Again,” by William Gleason, based on the film by Blake Edwards and Frank Waldman. When I was a kid I totally loved the movies and now my sons are big fans so maybe it’s in the genes.

Thanks to Rockville Central friend, John Cooper-Martin for telling me about this classic comedy. He sent along the promo flyer:

In this version, former Chief Inspector Dreyfus has gone insane and wants Clousseau (Johan Clarke) as ransom, lest the world suffer the consequences. Things get complicated when Olga Berriosiva arrives on the scene, in love with Clousseau and under orders to kill him! Join an colorful cast of characters for a side-splitting evening of classic comedy.

How much trouble will he get himself in and out of? We’ll have to investigate!

Visit the American Indian Rockville Festival

This Saturday November 7, 2009, the 12th annual American Indian event will boisterously fill the terrace and lobby levels of the Montgomery County Executive Office Building at 101 Monroe Street from 10 AM - 5 PM. Artifact displays, drumming musical performances, and cultural crafts will transform the government building into a lively exhibition hall. Since I have two boys who are scouts, my family enjoys all the lore, costumes, bows, and arrows. At noon, all the official sponsors (the City of Rockville, Montgomery County, The Indian Health Service and the >American Indian Society of Washington, D.C.) will make the proclamations recognizing November as American Indian Heritage month, then they’ll be a Grand Entry parade with dancers.

As Rockville Central is a 2010 Census Partner, the Bureau sends us statistical information on all sorts of things including American Indians:

The first American Indian Day was celebrated in May 1916 in New York. Red Fox James, a Blackfeet Indian, rode horseback from state to state, getting endorsements from 24 state governments, to have a day to honor American Indians. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed a joint congressional resolution designating November 1990 as “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations have been issued every year since 1994.

As of July 1, 2008, the estimated population of American Indians and Alaska Natives, including those of more than one race was 4.9 million. They made up 1.6 percent of the total population. The median income of households from the 2008 American Community Survey where the householder reported being American Indian and Alaska Native and no other race was $37,815. The 2008 poverty rate 24.2% for people who reported they were American Indian and Alaska Native and no other race.

Number of states with more than 100,000 American Indian and Alaska Native residents on July 1, 2008 were California, Oklahoma, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, New York, Washington, Florida, North Carolina, Michigan and Alaska. Combined, these states were home to 61 percent of the nation’s American Indian and Alaska Native residents.

As you can see, the majority of American Indians live out west so take advantage of this close-to-home opportunity to experience the traditions of our local American Indian neighbors.

Public parking is available at street meters and in lots on Monroe Street and Middle Lane.

Very Special National Philharmonic Concert for a Big 200TH

National Philharmonic Assistant Conductor Predrag Gosta will be making his Strathmoredebut this Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 8 PM in a concert which celebrates Mendelssohn’s birth and pays homage to Haydn’s passing 200 years ago. I had the great pleasure of asking him about this tremendous new experience and would like to share his answers.

What makes this concert special to you?

Last year I had a privilege of being appointed as the Assistant Conductor of the National Philharmonic - a post which I successfully completed this past August. I am happy to return to the Philharmonic in the capacity of a Guest Conductor. In addition, this concert will be my conducting debut in Washington DC, and the first with a major symphony orchestra in the United States. I very much look forward to it, and to everything that it may bring. I also am very happy that, at the performance of this concert, I will be surrounded by my friends, including four magnificent soloists, who will appear along the orchestra and 200-member Chorale.

Why is the concert significant in musical history?

This year we celebrate the 200th anniversary of both Haydn and Mendelssohn. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was born in 1709, which is the same year when Franz Joseph Haydn died. This year symbolizes in some sense the end of Classicism and the beginning of Romanticism. And we will celebrate this anniversary with two great monumental pieces by both of these composers - Haydn’s “Lord Nelson Mass”, and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2, “Lobgesang” (“Hymn of Praise”). These pieces are magnificent works, and everyone would enjoy hearing them in a venue such as the Music Center at Strathmore. Of special importance will be the revival of Mendelssohn’s Symphony-Cantata “Hymn of Praise,” which wasn’t performed in Washington DC area since 1980s. So, this will be its modern, 21st century premiere.

What are the highlights of the performance?

This concert will present a wonderful opportunity for anyone who likes vocal, choral or instrumental music for large ensemble, as it will feature the National Philharmonic Chorale of around 200 singers, the National Philharmonic Orchestra in its usual rendering of around 70 players, as well as four extremely talented soloists, some of them having their Stathmore debut together with me - soprano Sherri Seiden from Atlanta, Polish mezzo-soprano Magdalena Wór (who was until recently member of the National Opera’s Young Artist program under Placido Domingo), fabulous Swedish tenor Leif Aruhn-Solén, and Washington-favorite bass Kevin Deas.

A free pre-concert lecture will be offered in the Education Center at 7 PM. Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, named for the British admiral who defeated Napoleon in Egypt and Italy, “calls for dramatic soaring runs for the soprano and culminates in a jubilant finale.” Rediscovered in the 1980s, Mendelssohn’s grand choral Symphony No. 2 “was composed to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the invention of printing.”

Predrag Gosta, conductor; Sherri Seiden, soprano; Magdalena Wór, mezzo-soprano; Leif Aruhn-Solén, tenor; and Kevin Deas, bass.

Tickets can be purchased online. As you can tell, this promises to be an uplifting and special evening of music. Don’t miss it!

Pick of the Week 10/29/09 ROCKVILLE ZOMBIE WALK

ROCKVILLE ZOMBIE WALK

Rockville Zombie Walk
Friday, October 30, 2009
7 PM meet up, 7:30 Walk begings
Meet at the Apollo, 12 North Washington Street

For the absolute fun of it, turn yourself into a zombie and walk through Rockville Town Center among the unsuspecting. Who used to go to the Rocky Horror Picture Shows? Who just wants to laugh and have fun on a Friday night? What else are you going to do? Rockville Central friend Bill Bird and I are hosting this flash mob.

7:00 PM All the undead in Rockville will meet up at the mall at 12 North Washington Street to form the mob. Have a soda, drink or coffee while you wait. There’s full bar in the Apollo Restaurant /or/ coffee and gelato/desserts at Lola’s Cafe right next door. Get to know your fellow zombies. BUT MAKE IT QUICK!

7:30 PM The mass of zombies will limp off around the streets of Town Center to see who’s still among the living in Town Square.

7:50 PM Zombieland at the Rockville Regal 13!!!! What could be better than a theater full of zombies? See it with any and all of the undead in Rockville. It’s a ZOMCOM!!

From the WaPo, “Don of the Dead” features DC native Ruben Fleischer as Director. Here’s a bit:

“…”Zombieland,” which was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, turns out to be just plain hilarious, as Fleischer manages to keep the gore apolitical, the gross-outs appealing and, in between, the story surprisingly touching. (The film stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin.) But Fleischer allows that there’s something symbolic at the core of why zombie movies — be they dead serious or scathingly satirical — continue to fascinate audiences.”

You might want to get your tickets in advance especially if you limp slow (but hey really, those trailers last forever):

or

http://www.moviefone.com/theater/regal-cinemas-rockville-center-13/1750/showtimes

9:30 PM The movie is 1 hr. 21 mins. Austin Grill is thrilled to host the mob after the movie and will even put on a scary movie for us! So we can socialize after too.

Tell everyone. Spread the word around like a zombie virus.

Turning yourself into a zombie can be as easy as some powder and lipstick or much more elaborate. Who might have died that you could come back as? (If you are still among the living and not undead, come in your street clothes and be sure to bring a pencil. No survivor goes anywhere without a pencil as a weapon. Larger weapons are not advised!)

If you don’t want to zombie, the Rockville Sister City Corporation’s Annual Fall Wine Tasting of Red Wines of France is also this Friday, October 30, 2009 at 7:30 PM at the Rockville Senior Center. $25 for RCSS members, $30 for non-members. Heavy Hors d oeuves included.

If you attend an event in Rockville, we invite you to write a Contributor Review. Share the experience. Let everyone know about an event worth attending. Tell us about the school play, fair, or city activity, as long as it’s recent and you are not offering it for publication elsewhere. We prefer short, not more than 500 words. Please include a photo if you have one. Send it along to Cindy Cotte Griffths for consideration.

I haven’t been able to attend any of the previous Rockville Science Cafes but I am going to be at the next. My good friend and motorcycle buddy, Dr. Constance Bertka, will be speaking on Tuesday, October 20, 2009. You can see us here in this photo after returning from a weekend motorcycle rally back in June. (Please ignore the helmet hair!)

Her topic is The Earth and Carbon: The Inside Story. The Cafe will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 6 PM at the restaurant Branded 72 (formerly O’Briens BBQ).

Connie is the Program Director of the new Sloan Deep Carbon Observatory at the Carnegie Geophysical Laboratory. She coordinates the efforts of researchers around the world who are studying the nature of carbon in the earth’s interior. She’s a knowledgeable and insightful conversationalist on many broad-reaching topics.

In 2008, Connie was quoted in The Washington Post article Discoveries Out There Require Preparation Right Here about how the discovery of life forms on other planets would impact our religious and philosophical beliefs.

Admission to Science Cafes is free. Obviously, since Cafes are in a restaurant, you can purchase dinner and beverages.

I’m sorry I’ll have to miss the Twinbrook Citizens Association Candidate Forum but I’m glad it will be televised.

The Rockville Science Center has planned a series of Science Cafes in Rockville during 2009 through the beginning of 2010.
