Editor Cindy Cotte Griffiths posted an article about this earlier in the month, but sometimes such things get lost in the shuffle. We wanted to remind you that:

Rockville Housing Enterprises (RHE), the City’s independent public housing agency, will accept applications for the Public Housing waitlist for affordable three-and-four-bedroom units from Tuesday, June 22, through Thursday, June 24, 2010.

The last time the Public Housing wait list opened was in July 2009. Whenever RHE doesn’t have enough applicants to fill anticipated public housing vacancies, RHE opens the wait list. Generally, this occurs every two to three years. There is also a separate Housing Choice Voucher wait list but it will not be open at this time. Housing Choice Vouchers can be used to rent units from private landlords while the Public Housing waitlist is for specific units.

For the full rundown, see the original article here.

Since there is just one more day, we’d appreciate it if you passed the word.

In related news, our city planning and zoning commission voted 5-0 to approve the site plan for Victory Court, an 86-unit affordable housing building for seniors at Fleet Street and Maryland Avenue.

This is a private venture to be build by the Archdiocese of Washington through its non-profit housing subsidiary, Victory Housing.

This approval has been a very long time in the making (and came three hours into the meeting), and I and other citizens spoke in favor of it last night.

More units for all ages are desperately needed. I eagerly await MHP breaking ground on the revised site plan for Beall’s Grant II, also recently approved by the planning commission.

It is so refreshing to hear that the Public Housing wait list is opened. There is a great need for this housing program. Many more will not make the list but qualify.

The Rockville Victory Housing project is sure to provide accommodations to the many on the list. A big “thank you” goes to the Archdiocese of Washington for supporting this much needed project. They have followed the process, all zoning and land use codes at great expense. The project has had to endure too much scrutiny in my opinion.

I agree with Lisa Rother that the flat roof is not the best. I have had SERIOUS problems with my flat roof on my house addition. I would give the approval for extra height. It’s too bad that some of the community likes to make some things difficult. I hope they are pleased.
