Trash Day

It’s trash day on my block. Last week we didn’t have pickup because of Memorial Day. It made me recall the ongoing argument over >switching from twice-per-week trash pickup to once-per-week.

I am in favor of once-per-week. Two times a week is a waste of resources, in my view.

What about you? What do you think?

I agree with having once a week pick up. However, alternate pick up days should be factored in for holidays.>
Those of us on the current Monday-Thursday collection schedule are very familiar with not having pick up of recyclables for 2 weeks. Three of the 5 holidays from trash pick up (Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving) are automatically cut from our schedule.
With our current system, the garbage is not a hassle because it can be picked up on the second collection day. The recycling, however, is another story. On the Mondays that our trash is not collected, storing recyclables for an extra week is a real challenge.

I agree…On a once per week schedule, missed pickups ought to be squeezed into the regular route not just held for an extra week. That applies to recycling as well as trash, imho.

We had once-a-week pickup in Silver Spring and it worked well. Our elderly neighbor worries about losing ‘at-the-door’ pickup; could the city adjust for those unable to put stuff on the curb? Maybe students seeking service hours could run a Recycla-teer deal where they pick up recycling on holiday weeks (liability issues aside). From Lori

Once a week would be the best use of our resources. Cutting the pollution from garbage trucks by half would be an accomplishment. But after the public hearings in February, it looks like the decision is to stick with two. All houses aren’t created equal and some would have trouble storing the larger-sized bin required for once-a-week. Admittedly, I didn’t participate in this process at all.>

The elderly can request to continue house-side pick-up by the workers. This has been fine in the pilot program.

I had been very distressed by the fact that the wheeled bin for recycling was only for paper, requiring everyone to still drag the blue bins to the curb. The last recommendation has all recycled materials - paper, bottles & cans in the wheeled bin, so now I’m all in favor of the whole thing.

    I’m agreeable to once-a-week pick up. >

If this were to happen, I would hope trash would be picked up the day after, in case the regular pickup occurred on a holiday, and that we were provided large raccoon-proof bins.

I don’t see any problem with once a week trash pick-up, but like Monique mentions, the two-week delay for recycling is pretty tough to cope with, especially over holiday weekends that are designed for having guests over (like Memorial Day). Thankfully, we have two recycling bins, but even that wasn’t enough to hold all our recyclables this past Memorial Day weekend. I sure hope that part of the issue gets addressed, but I think once a week trash pickup makes sense.

I agree. We’re part of the once-per-week pilot in Hungerford, and the service is great!>

FYI, I’ve been encouraging the City Council to shift to once-per-week City-wide, or at least give residents the option of once-per-week service at a price discount. I started a ROCKTRASH network of like-minded residents to help push the issue. For more info, email me at [email protected].
