I suppose it should be “gobble gobble,” shouldn’t it? Maybe my good friend Ruth can tell me what kind of bird this is!

It was just sitting there in someone’s yard, ignoring me.

Pick of the Week

First Friday night at the Rockville Arts and Innovation Center! September 5th. It’s a triple play!! First, if you haven’t gone to the top for one of the City’s First Friday Deck Parties - this is your last chance this year! Be able to say you went during the first summer. 5 PM - 8 PM. Billy Coulter is traditional American Rock and Roll. He has a bunch of new songs out. Give a listen. Gordon Biersch is back with their brew, too. You must be 21 years old - and don’t try to bring the kids. I know this from experience! Second, VisArts is OPEN from 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM, so you can meet all the artists working in their studios and view the current exhibit, Inspired by Weather, as well as the art created by the kids during the summer camps. The exhibit just opened and it will quickly close on September 6th. Wine and Cheese if you arrive early. Third, it’s HearArts from 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM. See the full description below and come prepared to share your writing or music during the Open Mic portion. One of these nights I’m going to, so watch out!! Honestly, where else can you triple your fun like this?!

Gajewski Town Hall Meeting Features Football, Mansions

Aug 28, 2008 5:55 -
Posted by: Brad Rourke
Department: Opinion

While >Rockville Central readers were among the first to read about City Council Member Piotr Gajewski’s plans to hold periodic “town hall meetings” and were the first to be able to read a recap of the inaugural one (which I called “civil and frank”), sadly I was unable to attend the last two.

Thanks to Contessa Crisostomo at the Gazette, we have a good recap of Gajewski’s latest such meeting.

Topics at last week’s town hall ranged from one resident’s concerns that her son will not make weight and be able to play with his friends in the city-affiliated Rockville Football League (I can relate, as my son is playing football for the first time and we were anxious about Saturday’s weigh-in) to the nascent new zoning ordinance’s restrictions on “mansionization.”

For the record, according to the Gazette, Gajewski “does not believe the city should be in the football league business,” and “is on the side of more height to protect residents’ property rights.”

Go here to read the full piece.

Meantime, I would like to praise Council Member Gajewski for holding his town hall meetings. He’s taken some heat for doing so.

Yes, the Mayor and Council as a body hold their own such meetings (I did my best to cover one). But I believe it is only to the good for individual Mayor and Council members to provide such spaces for citizens to learn more about where Our Fair City’s political leaders are coming from as individuals. It lets us get to know them better.

The> Gazette reports today that a former Thomas Wootton High School English Teacher, Theresa Cunningham Duarte, was charged on Monday with selling cocaine to students from her Brice Avenue home. Duarte had been a teacher at Wootton from July 2004 until the end of last school year, when she resigned.

She was charged Monday with two counts of “distribution of a controlled dangerous substance” and two counts of “contributing to conditions of a child,” according to the Gazette.

Police say they believe more students may have been involved than just the ones Duarte was charged for selling to. A spokesperson said it was unlikely the students would be arrested.

Anyone with more information is asked to call Montgomery County Police Department’s Family Crimes Detective K. Carvajal at 240-773-5400.

It will be brown-bag: We’ll stake out some tables near the Out To Lunch Wednesday stage (by the Regal Cinemas) and listen to Sandra Dean while we ponder the issues of the day. So, grab your lunch and come on over. It helps if you let me know you are coming ahead of time, but if you wake up that day and just decide you want to attend, don’t let not having RSVP’d stop you! Just come!

Also, we’re also happy to announce the return, after a summer break, of the popular Rockville Central Radio! Our next scheduled show is Friday, September 5, at noon.

To listen, simply come to Rockville Central and click on the link at the right (the one that says “radio,” natch). Better still — call in! Over and Under: Biking the Bridge

Aug 26, 2008 14:11 -

Tags: , , ,

Spurred by a recent comment about a lack of traffic on the >Sister City Friendship Bridge, my family set out to bike across this enticing expanse. Whizzing past in the car, I’ve always wanted to try it.

Ten years ago residents identified I-270 as a major barrier between Town Center and points west. No sidewalks, shoulders or crosswalks existed. The Sister City Friendship Bridge opened in October 2007 to remedy this situation. Now it connects the Fallsgrove neighborhood to our new Town Center. The name honors our 50-year friendship with Pinneberg, Germany. In February 2008, the One Less Car organization named it one of the most bicycle and pedestrian-friendly projects in Maryland.

At 0.75 miles in length, the bridge turns out to be two bridges meandering through the loud roar of I-270. Although it was the middle of the day, we met a man biking and a woman jogging, so people are using the bridge. The only dangerous part was crossing the street-level entrance and exit ramps for I-270 on the eastern side. One car almost didn’t stop for the red light before deciding to turn right. Once on the bridges, you can safely enjoy the view — of all the traffic. Our only disappointment was that the Bridge wasn’t longer.

Our excursion lasted about one hour and included a trip through the tunnel under Maryland Avenue by Monument Park. When biking with kids, tunnels and bridges are certainly the safest way to go. Now that we’ve tried it, I think we will regularly bike to visit our friends in Fallsgrove. In just one trip the Bridge has gone from a special destination to an ordinary necessity.

Rockville Man Praying For Lower Gas Prices

Aug 25, 2008 7:27 -
Posted by: Brad Rourke
Department: News

>Maybe you’ve heard about recent attempts to seek divine intervention for lower gas prices. People gather to pray for lower gas prices at various fueling stations — and some of the owners (for instance one in Huntsville, Alabama) oblige. According to the Financial Post, the budding movement was recently featured on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show:

“Hey, have you heard about this group called Pray at the Pump? They’re a prayer group that sprang up, and they go to gas stations and they hold hands and they pray for lower gas prices — otherwise known as the Bush energy plan,” [Leno] said recently.

Pray at the Pump is led by a local resident, Rockefeller “Rocky” Twyman, who has been featured in Rockville Central before for his efforts to pray for rain for the then-dry state of Georgia.

According to a recent profile in Forbes:

Twyman said he believes the vigils, which he started after seeing the stinging effects of high gas prices on a Washington-area soup kitchen, are working.

God “owns everything, he owns the gas,” exclaimed Twyman, a Seventh-tday Adventist. “All we have to do is ask and we shall receive.”

Twyman has led similar vigils in recent months in Detroit; Huntsville, Ala.; San Francisco; St. Louis and Toledo, Ohio.

Rockville Roundtable Moved To Sept. 3

Terribly sorry to do this, but I need to reschedule a previously-scheduled event! I am going to be on an airplane at that timne and can’t be two places at once. So . . .>

The next Rockville Roundtable is now moved to Wednesday, September 3 from 12:00 until 1:30 pm.

We’re going to try an experiment . . . it will be a brown-bag affair! We’ll stake out some tables near the Out To Lunch Wednesday stage (by the Regal Cinemas) and we will be able to groove to Sandra Dean while we ponder the issues of the day. So, grab your lunch and come on over!

What is this “Rockville Roundtable” thing, you ask? Simple. It’s just an informal lunch. Every month or so I pick a spot and whoever wants to come join me for lunch (Dutch!) is more than welcome. There is no dress code, no “presentation,” and it is super casual. Come as you are!

It helps if you let me know you are coming ahead of time, but if you wake up that day and just decide you want to attend, don’t let not having RSVP’d stop you! Just come!

HIllcrest Labs: That's Our Wiimote!

Aug 21, 2008 9:45 -
Posted by: Brad Rourke
Department: Business,News

>Friends and readers of Rockville Central may recall CindyCG’s interesting profile of a local tech company called Hillcrest Labs. Hillcrest (just up the way on Shady Grove) is developing a system wireless pointing devices for your TV — think remotes on steroids. A very cool idea.

Perhaps so cool, according to Hillcrest, that one very hot company couldn’t keep its hands off. Says the International Herald Tribune:

Nintendo‘s hit Wii console with its wandlike remote controller has been targeted in patent infringement complaints by a U.S. technology company. Hillcrest Laboratories, based in Rockville, Maryland, has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington D.C., and a patent infringement lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Maryland against Nintendo Corp., the company said in a statement Wednesday. . . . “While Hillcrest Labs has a great deal of respect for Nintendo and the Wii, Hillcrest Labs believes that Nintendo is in clear violation of its patents and has taken this action to protect its intellectual property rights,” it said.

If you have anyone in your house under the age of 65, you know how cool the “Wiimote” is and you have probably wished your regular TV remote worked the same way — just point an click, none of this button business.

We’ll be watching this local-David vs. international-Goliath story and keep you posted. Here’s Hillcrest’s full statement.

This isn’t the only international gaming-tech connection in Our Fair City. Zenimax, just up I-270, is a serious player in the space.
