Mayor Elected To MML Board
>Ruth Hanessian has sent us some breaking news. At the Maryland Municipal League (MML) Annual Conference in Ocean City, Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio was elected as one of their ten board members, a very prestigious position.
Ruth added, “It reflects well on those of us in Rockville who elected her mayor.”
When pre-registration closed, 115 municipalities had registered. Almost 900 city, town, county and state officials, as well as corporate representatives, planned to attend. The Convention was held from June 27th to the 30th and included over 200 exhibit booths and a large display of public works vehicles. Governor Martin O’Malley spoke at the inaugural dinner for the new members on Tuesday. The workshop topics included special taxing districts, storm water management regulations, and improving economic health.
The Keynote speaker was Mark Levin who identified the benefits of pursuing an aggressive volunteer recruitment effort and what municipal officials can do to attract people as volunteers. He spoke about how to get the most from the volunteer community.
In Rockville, we are familiar with the MML because the organization sponsors the “If I Were Mayor, I Would” contest.
Congratulations to Mayor Marcuccio.

Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio being elected to the Maryland Municipal League Board is fantastic news. No doubt she will be exposed to an abundance of information beyond Rockville issues.Thank you Ruth for sharing this news. I look forward to the Rockville’s News Release on the Mayor’s new role.I wish I could have heard Mark Levin talk about the” benefits of pursuing an aggressive volunteer recruitment effort and what municipal officials can do to attract people as volunteers.” I hope to hear from Mayor Marcuccio on her reaction to the presentation.
Phyllis election is even more impressive when you consider that she is one of the 10 delegates at large elected in a statewide contested election. She will be really taking care of Rockvilles’ business.
I personally want to hear more about the MML contested election because our June 29 TCA election was a scam. Rockville will hear more about it and it is my hope it isn’t only Brigitta who speaks out.For the first time in my history in Twinbrook, 129 neighbors cast their votes for TCA officers. On June 24 the TCA Board was officially notified of my team’s candidates. They knew about it unofficially after June 9. The TCA executive committee:1. Did not acknowledge our candidacy after I officially notifying TCA with four names.2. Did not advise the TCA membership of our candidacy.3 Did not let the individual who was prepared to nominate my team speak.4 Did not give me an opportunity to read my one page statement, and5. Made the election process entangled and frustrating. These are only a few of the many issues of concern how this civic association is NOT representing our diverse community. The Twinbrook Citizens Association needs to improve if it wants to be more effective and truly represent the diverse community we are.
I checked with the MML to learn more about this election. According to the MML, 12 people ran for the 10 at-large seats. Many Rockville residents, employees and elected officials have previously served on the board of directors, and served as president, including G. LaMar Kelly, Jr. Achilles M. Tuchtan, William E. Hanna, John R. Freeland, and John Tyner.
Theresa you are so resourceful in checking the MML information. It was nice to see four names that I recognize well.
