On Tuesday night, the District 17 Democratic Club held the final debate of the primary campaign between incumbent Sen. Jennie Forehand and challenger, former Del. Cheryl Kagan, at Rockville Memorial Library.

The primary election is September 14.

Rockville Central was there at the debate capturing video, and we are releasing it in sections over the next few days.

The first four audience questions:

  1. How can Maryland improve our health care rankings?
  2. Name an issue that you are passionate about but that gets little attention.
  3. Should an extra $300 million of revenue be directed to state workers who have had to go on furloughs?
  4. Montgomery is often treated like “Daddy Warbucks.” What can we do about that?

Here’s the video:

Note: you can see I started and stopped the video with each question, so it looks like it jumps from one to the other question. I did not edit out anything of substance; the video includes every question and answer from this section of the debate.

I think this is one of the best, most evenly presented exchanges I’ve seen to date between these two candidates….I’m still looking for more informaton on some issues that I haven’t heard much about that are really important to me.

I know one candidate has been endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters, but I’ve heard scarcely anything so far on environmental and development issues, which are a big concern of mine.

I have also reviewed their web sites and only one candidate stated openly where they stand on gay marriage in Maryland, but the other was endorsed by Equality MD. I’d like to know more about that from both candidates and what they will personally do to affect the issue.

Also, there’ve been some interesting exchanges on the budget situation that I’ve read and listened to, but neither candidate has provided (in my mind) much if any specific ideas on where balance might be found for the budget whether on the revenue or spending sides. I want to know that I’m going to elect someone prudent with tax dollars, but not someone who isn’t willing to fight for important priorities they believe in.

    I am still wanting more……am I alone?

You are not alone in wanting more information. It is most unfortunate that voters don’t take time to follow all the issues. That is why we have representation in the Maryland State Assembly. We expect our representatives and senators to represent us well when voting on legislations which affect our lives.

Reading comments on Rockville Central is useful when you receive opinions on both sides. Unfortunately, a small number of voters visit the site and not enough voters are familiar with all the issues. I find it difficult to keep up with the legislations being proposed each year and I am retired now.
