I’ve heard this statistic before, but I just can’t get it to translate into real terms. If we’re all so rich, why does the county have a budget shortfall? If we’re so rich, why does it take days or weeks to get the power back? If we’re so rich, why do I walk past the same homeless guy on my way to the Metro every morning?
Without real life application, the statistic loses meaning. Sixth richest? So what?
the stats are referring to personal incomes, not county or state budgets, i would guess. just like the rest of america, we have a crumbling infrastructure. ask the folks in new orleans how long they waited for help, or iowans who had floods. our service demands are rapidly met in comparison to many places.
look at your personal life and see if you feel “rich.” i don’t measure riches in material terms.
what is distributing to me is those who are “rich” find a way to ignore (or downright oppress) those who are not. maybe that homeless guy you keep passing needs a hand up or a referral to a shelter. you’re right-our riches haven’t reached him.
i’m embarrassed by the ranking. i didn’t move here of my own accord and would never purposely seek out a community based on its income level.
