The Newest Kid Craze
>
Out of nowhere last week, local elementary kids went crazy for rubber bands. All of a sudden colorful rubber bands in an array of shapes were all over the place. The kids wear multiple bands up their arms and trade them all day long. Some are more valuable than others, especially the ones which glow in the dark. Suddenly teachers needed rules. Some classrooms ban them altogether while others ban the unending trading.
My son had a full collection without ever buying a package thanks to generous friends. By last weekend I gave in and we joined the craze by buying a few packages at Toy Kingdom. I couldn’t resist the pink bunny, blue motorcycle, and yellow guitar. You have to have your favorite things. Unfortunately, my wrists are too big to wear my collection as bracelets.
At Toy Kingdom the sales clerks said the packages had been on display for a couple of months and no one paid attention. The craze was going strong in North Carolina and California but not here in Maryland. Then all of a sudden, everyone’s looking for the “silly bands”. A package of 24 “zany bandz” costs $4.99, while 12 of Toysmith’s “Shaped Rubber Bands” in various themes costs $2.50. Sharing and trading is easy with such a low-cost, simple idea.
Most of the fun is guessing and discovering the shapes. That’s the fun. What do you see? We all have some creative ideas before figuring out the intended shape. Your choice of favorites is telltale. Friends will often direct each other to fitting finds. It’s all about getting to know each other and sharing. This craze has something for everyone.

Local Girl On Jeopardy!

Correction: Photo from the family album
Michelle Schrier, a former student at Ritchie Park Elementary now attending Eastern Middle School, is going to be on Jeopardy! . The show airs on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 7:30 PM.
Michelle was watching the show and saw the announcement about Jeopardy! Kids Week. She immediately told her mother she wanted to compete. The first step was an online test. She was then invited to New York City for the weekend for another online test, mock games and a practice interview. Much to the family’s surprise, the producer called from California and she was on the show. She and her mother went to Los Angeles for the taping at the beginning of April.
Her mom, Lesley Schrier, said all the kids had a great time and they keep in touch by email. Michelle is away at camp for a month and the family is sending a DVD of the show for all the campers to watch during dinner the following day.
Starting on July 13th, interviews and pictures from the show will be posted on the Jeopardy! Kids Week website.
Unlike the adult version, kids compete on only one show. The family has been sworn to secrecy about the results so we’ll all have to watch!

David Gelin Talks BBQ Joints
Department: News

>
BB-Q, Bar-B-Que, Barbecue, or B-B-Que. No matter how you like to spell it, mosey on over to the Rockville Library this Saturday, November 28 29, 2008 at 3 PM to find out all about it.
Rockville native son, David Gelin, will be serving up a lively sample of his book, BBQ JOINTS: Stories and Secret Recipes from the Barbeque Belt. After graduating from Richard Montgomery High School, he headed down south to Emory University and never looked back. Many of you may know him as the son of Jacque and Margaret Gelin.
After an extensive journey in search of the best barbeque, David pulls together a book that goes beyond a travel guide or restaurant listing. You won’t forget the life stories and contemplative gazes of the folks from these hole-in-the-wall or out-of-the-way joints. Lately I’ve grown restless with fictional, made-up stories and seek appealing, true-life narratives so maybe that’s why I read the book cover to cover even though I have no plans to visit these states in the near future. The passionate people who serve up their renowned barbeque make your acquaintance on every page.
The photographs from the book were shown as an exhibit at the University of South Carolina in Columbia but David explains, “I can’t begin to tell you how many places I have been to that were everything I could ever hope for in a picture, and I could just tell that there was a gem of a story behind the place. But I couldn’t be true to you if I steered you to a place where the food is just mediocre.”
David dishes up a comprehensive list of what should not be at a barbeque joint. Keep driving if you see a costumed animal waving. Don’t eat it if it’s drenched in barbeque sauce. Avoid chains at all costs. To find out what makes a place a good bet, you’ll just have to buy the book. You’ll also find some fine recipes on how to grill corn-on-the-cob, make slaw, fry tilapia, boil peanuts, bake Elvis’s pound cake, or even cook coon burgers.
If you are planning a trip to the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, or Texas and walk into one of these joints with knowledge of David’s work, rumor has it that you get the royal treatment. I feel like I’ve already had a whirlwind trip down South.
Any of my family still wallowing around my house after the Thanksgiving excess will come with me to the Rockville Library. Perhaps by Saturday we’ll be able to think about food again because this book will make a great holiday present.

7:30 pm-9:30 pm HearArts: David Salner & Victoria Vox at VisArts at Rockville HearArts is a unique concept in cultural entertainment, fusing the literary and musical arts. Evenings typically combine a poet or fiction writer reading from his/her work, and a musician or musical group. The featured artists are followed by an open mic segment for writers or musicians in the audience who would like to share their work. Held in conjunction with VisArts’ Art after Hours, in which the buildings galleries and studios stay open late, HearArts offers the public an opportunity to widen its artistic perspective. This month: Writer: David Salner. David Salner’s poetry is deeply influenced by the people he knew during the 25 years he worked at manual trades. An iron ore miner, furnace tender, power plant laborer, machinist, and garment worker, he lived in Minnesota, Arizona, Utah, and for many years in West Virginia, Before becoming an industrial worker, Salner completed an MFA degree at the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. The author of three previous books, he received a Puffin Foundation grant to study the real history behind the John Henry myth. His work has appeared in Threepenny Review, Prairie Schooner, The Literary Review, North American Review, Southern Humanities Review, Free Lunch, Poetry Daily, and many other journals. In recent years, Salner has taught English as a second language; he currently works as a librarian. He lives in Frederick, MD with his wife, Barbara Greenway, a high school English teacher. Musician: Victoria Vox – Ukelele Originally a guitarist, Victoria Vox, studied at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, earning a scholarship, award, and degree there in Songwriting. She subsequently moved to Nashville, then London, and ultimately back to the USA. In 2003, she founded her own label, Obus Music.
She took to the ukulele in 2004 and immediately began writing songs for it. In 2006 Vox released the well reviewed Victoria Vox and her Jumping Flea. Vox’s newest album is called Chameleon, on which she mixes ukelele and guitar songs for a unique sound. Summer Smiles and Lemonade
The first thing to catch my eye was the waving. Kids were jumping up and down with big arrows and pointing at a table. It could only be a summer lemonade stand! The offerings also included Kool Aid and bottled water. Quite a selection!>

As we know, I was wondering what the kids in my neighborhood would do when the Summer Madness playground program ended in July. They decided to earn some money the good old capitalist way.
Their aspirations reach beyond beverages. As smart business planners they are surveying customers about other possible products such as brownies, cookies, or cake. Their teachers at Ritchie Park Elementary would be happy to see them tallying the answers and plotting the results. If they add nail painting, I’ll be first in line. They’re really thinking!
Standing among their smiling faces, I found myself remembering
the lemonade stands of my youth in New Jersey. All the kids on my block would meet down in the empty lot. Our gimmick was beating a drum set. You always need something to draw attention. The best part was being together with your friends on those long days of summer.
Business was booming. If you’re thirsty near the intersection of Mt. Vernon and Blandford Street, keep your eye out for this little business enterprise.

A Fine Night Out!
Last night, the rain stayed away and so did the heat that’s blasted us in years past — and the National Night Out was a real treat. I enjoyed myself making the rounds to a >number of neighborhood celebrations as the community took a stand together against crime and the forces that would erode our feelings of safety and connection.
While I did not see everyone, I saw a number of folks in College Gardens, David Scull Residences, East Rockville by the Pump House, Lewis Avenue near Broadwood, and my own block, Beall Avenue near Peg Sante Park. I got back from my travels so late I almost missed my own party and was only able to get night shots!
Below, I’ve embedded a slideshow of some of the photos that turned out well from the evening. (Remember, if you are reading this in a feed or by email, the slideshow won’t come through and you need to come to the blog.)
UPDATE: Direct link to the photo album is here.
I know for a fact that Rockville Central friend Chas Hausheer was out taking photos in East Rockville, because he sent me the link (which is here).
If you have photos, upload ‘em and let people know in the comments!

Serenading Rockville’s “Unsung Heroes”
>Councilmember Piotr Gajewski presided over the City’s annual presentation of its Good Neighbor Awards tonight. Glenview Mansion was as decked out as the award recipients on this balmy summer evening when honorees, friends, family and their neighbors gathered for a reception and awards ceremony. The crowd cheered for the men and women who improve the quality of life in their communities in big and small ways – from advice and guidance to community activism to leaf raking and snow shoveling for neighbors in need to “creating, managing and implementing memorable community events with good humor and hard work” to reaching out to new neighbors with generosity and kindness “that makes more people willing to move out of our comfort zones” to a network of ten families who together provided food, flowers, clothing, cards, and entertainment for a neighbor who had become wheelchair bound.
The 2008 Recipients include: Wilma Bell of Lincoln Park, Marshall Fisher of College Gardens, Chas Hausheer of East Rockville, Joseph McClane of Cambridge Walk II, Paul O’Brien of College Gardens, Shari Perry of College Gardens, Andreas Vassilas of Twinbrook, James Wilburn of Lincoln Park, and Jack and Priscilla Baublitz, Michael and Jeanine Hartnett, Haywood and Lorraine Hughes, George and Roberta Margolies, Jim and Mary Martin, Jesse and Mary Meneses, Dave and Anne McBain, Gerry McDonald, Gram and Diane Paules, Mildred Shields, and Lois Wilson all of College Gardens who were honored together for their support of an ill neighbor. Rockville Central’s founder Brad Rourke was also honored for launching Rockville Central.
If you know someone who makes your neighborhood a better place, you can nominate them next year through the City Manager’s Department.
